What Is a Power Flush?
Over years of use, central heating water reacts with the steel inside radiators to form black magnetic sludge (magnetite). It settles in radiators, clogs pipework, and grinds away at your boiler's pump and heat exchanger. The symptoms are familiar: radiators cold at the bottom, a system that takes forever to warm up, banging noises from the boiler, and gas bills creeping upward.
A power flush connects a high-flow pumping unit to your system and circulates cleaning chemicals at velocity through every radiator and pipe run, dislodging and capturing the sludge with magnetic filtration. Once the water runs clean, we dose the system with corrosion inhibitor to keep it that way.
The difference is often dramatic - radiators that heat evenly to the edges, faster warm-up, a quieter boiler, and better efficiency.

Do You Need a Power Flush?
The classic signs: radiators with cold patches at the bottom while hot at the top, some radiators heating much later than others, dirty brown or black water when you bleed a radiator, kettling or banging noises from the boiler, and a noticeable rise in heating bills without a price change.
If you're only seeing the problem in one radiator, a single-radiator flush or replacement may be all you need - we'll always recommend the cheaper fix where it will genuinely solve the problem.
Power Flushing Before a New Boiler
Fitting a new boiler onto a dirty system is like putting a new engine in a car full of old oil - and most manufacturers know it. Many warranties require evidence that the system was properly cleansed at installation. That's why our Gold and Platinum installation packages include a full system cleanse as standard. If you're having a boiler installed elsewhere or upgrading an older system, a standalone power flush gives a new boiler the clean start its warranty expects.

Power Flushing FAQs
How much does a power flush cost?
It depends on the size of your system - a typical home with up to 8 radiators is our standard rate, with a small additional cost per extra radiator. You'll get a fixed price before we book the work.
How long does a power flush take?
Usually half a day to a full day depending on the size of the system and how heavily sludged it is. We'll give you an estimate when we see the system.
Will it fix my cold radiators?
If the cause is sludge - which it usually is - yes. If a radiator is heavily corroded internally, flushing may not fully restore it, and we'll tell you honestly if replacement is the better option.
How often should a system be power flushed?
A properly inhibited system with a magnetic filter shouldn't need flushing more than once every 8-10 years, if at all. Annual servicing and keeping the inhibitor topped up is the best prevention.
Can power flushing damage old pipework?
It's a fair question. On very old or fragile systems, dislodging debris can occasionally reveal weak joints that were already failing. We assess every system first and will advise if a gentler chemical cleanse is the safer route.
