A hot water cylinder paired with a system boiler stores a large volume of hot water ready to serve multiple outlets at once, which is why it remains the right choice for larger Sussex family homes.
We install and replace both types: traditional vented cylinders fed from a loft tank, and modern unvented cylinders (such as Megaflo-style units) that run at mains pressure - giving you powerful showers without a pump. Unvented cylinders are pressurised vessels and legally require a G3-qualified engineer to install; our engineers hold that qualification and every installation is certificated.

Vented or Unvented - What's the Difference?
A vented cylinder is the traditional setup: a cold water tank in the loft feeds the cylinder by gravity, which limits pressure - especially upstairs. An unvented cylinder connects directly to the mains, so you get strong, even pressure at every tap and shower in the house, no loft tank, and no pump noise.
The trade-off is that unvented cylinders cost more to install and require an annual safety check. For most multi-bathroom homes the difference in shower performance makes it well worth it - but if your existing vented system works well, a like-for-like replacement is the budget-friendly option and we're happy to fit either.
Signs Your Cylinder Is on Its Way Out
Water not staying hot as long as it used to, rumbling or popping sounds when heating (limescale on the element or coil), rusty water from hot taps, damp patches or weeping joints around the cylinder, and ever-longer reheat times. Cylinders over 15 years old are also poorly insulated by modern standards - a new cylinder keeps water hot for far longer using the same energy.

How much does a new hot water cylinder cost?
It depends on the cylinder type and size - a like-for-like vented replacement is the most affordable option, while unvented installations and vented-to-unvented conversions cost more depending on the cylinder and pipework. You'll get a fixed quote after a free survey.
What size cylinder do I need?
As a rough guide: 150-180 litres suits a 3-bedroom home with one bathroom, 210-250 litres for two bathrooms, and 300+ litres for larger homes. We'll size it properly based on your bathrooms and usage patterns.
Do unvented cylinders need servicing?
Yes - an annual check of the safety valves and expansion vessel is required to keep the warranty valid and the system safe. We can do it alongside your annual boiler service in a single visit.
Can I switch from a combi boiler to a cylinder system?
Yes. If your combi can't keep up with your household's hot water demand, we can convert to a system boiler with an unvented cylinder. It's a bigger job than a boiler swap, but it transforms hot water performance in busy homes.
How long does a cylinder replacement take?
A like-for-like swap is usually done in a day. Conversions from vented to unvented typically take 1-2 days including the pipework changes.
